Olympic Training, Applied to You

Most people assume getting fitter means training more. Elite sport works the other way round. Athletes get better when every session is planned and measured, and when they recover well enough to adapt.

Sarah trained that way for three Olympic cycles. Every ROAR programme is built on the same approach, for fat loss, muscle or strength, and for complete beginners as much as experienced lifters.

From Team GB to ROAR

Sarah came through the British system as a short track speed skater, a sport where races are won on technique and on decisions made in a packed field. She was British champion ten times, won European gold and raced at three Winter Olympic Games in a row.

How Olympic Training Shapes Your Programme

Every ROAR trainer, in London and Dubai, works to the five principles Sarah trained under. Here is how each one worked on the ice, and how it works in your programme.

The five ROAR principles, how they worked in Olympic training and how they work in your programme
PrincipleOn the IceIn Your Programme
Structured ProgressionTraining planned in phases towards a competition, with every session given a job.A programme written in phases towards your goal, so each session moves you closer to it.
Precision CoachingTechnique repeated until it held under pressure, with small gains measured and kept.Your trainer corrects technique on every set, records what you lift and adjusts the plan from the numbers.
Performance NutritionFood planned around training to fuel performance and recovery.A nutrition plan built around your training and the foods you already eat, with no crash dieting.
AccountabilityA coach reviewing progress every week and holding the athlete to agreed targets. You check in with your trainer every week, so someone is holding you to the plan between sessions.
Recovery and LongevityRecovery planned as carefully as training, because a career at the top only lasts if the body does.Sleep and recovery planned alongside training, so you keep progressing and keep your results once the programme ends.

Your First Steps at ROAR

The structure comes from elite sport, but you start from where you are. Beginners build up at a pace that is safe for them.

Choose City of London, Kensington or Downtown Dubai and book a free 30-minute consultation. We’ll ask what you want to achieve and how training fits around your week.

Your trainer checks how you move and measures your body composition, then you agree your targets together.

Your trainer writes your training and nutrition plans, measures your progress and adjusts both every week.

I've been training with Kareem at Roar and I am really happy with my progress. Kareem is an amazing PT - professional, knowledgable, and amicable and knows how to push you. Highly recommend training with him.

Signed up to RoaR back in July and I’d highly recommend it. From the welcoming initial consultation onwards, an individualised training and diet plan is set for you, which essentially guarantees results if you follow it. The sessions with Alfie have been awesome and I’ve built strength / muscle rapidly, James is a walking encyclopaedia on nutrition who knows his stuff. Both trainers have taught me lots of useful things around training and nutrition that I’ll take in to practice beyond my time at RoaR.

I have been training for 12 weeks with Todd who has been excellent at guiding me through exercises and has pushed and motivated me to achieve more than I thought possible. Todd is also very knowledgable about nutrition and has given me many tips to help with my diet. I would thoroughly recommend training with Todd!

The gym is well kitted and quiet which is great given I’m antisocial. My trainer Todd is actually pretty good (won’t tell him that) and somehow gets me to keep coming back. I’m not going to say he makes it enjoyable but given that I’ve now been going consistently since February it can’t be that bad. The stars are mainly for Todd.

I have been training for 3 years at Roar. Todd is an excellent trainer! He’s incredibly knowledgeable, organized, and always comes prepared with a clear plan for each session. He knows how to challenge and motivate you while keeping workouts positive and enjoyable. I really appreciate his attention to detail, encouragement and we still have good fun together (except leg day ;))

I’ve only had one session with Todd so far, but I was genuinely impressed. He listened carefully, understood exactly what I wanted from the session and tailored everything accordingly. Most importantly, he knew when to push and when not to. I never felt pressured beyond what was sensible or comfortable. He comes across as knowledgeable, considered and very professional. A great first session, and I’m looking forward to continuing to train with him. Highly recommend Todd at Roar.

I’ve had a fantastic experience at Roar. Todd Gouldborne is an exceptional trainer — highly professional, knowledgeable, motivating, and genuinely invested in helping you get the best out of every session. I’m very happy with the progress we’ve made and always look forward to training with him. Roar itself is on another level. The quality of the coaching, facilities, and overall experience is outstanding, and I’m very happy to be a member. Highly recommended — and a special shoutout to Todd for doing such a great job!

I would highly recommend Todd at Roar. His breadth of knowledge and ability to keep me working hard while navigating my perimenopausal aches and pains have been fantastic! He listens, adapts and keeps our sessions enjoyable. I also really appreciate his holistic approach to my fitness—encouraging me to eat well but also to enjoy the off-plan days! A great trainer and a lovely person. Thank you, Todd!

I’ve been training at Roar was just the studio I was looking for, great sunlight…. for the past 3–4 months I’ve been training with Sam and couldn’t recommend him enough. Top lad, genuinely invested in his clients and always puts the effort in. What I really appreciate is how involved he gets in your journey, he pays attention to your progress, pushes you when you need it, and works around your schedule and individual needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Overall the gym has, great energy and just an all-round place to pickup on your fitness journey. Highly recommend.

I’ve been going to Roar for over 18months now -which as an historical gym phob -is a huge success- no less down to Dov, my dedicated personal trainer -who has successfully broken down my mental block associated with gym workouts- Roar have been brilliant in assessing which of their trainers would be a positive match -I highly recommend going and having an intro chat -the set up and staff are great

Questions About Olympic-Style Training

Anything not covered here, ask us at your free consultation.

Every session is planned in advance. Your trainer writes your programme in phases with measurable targets, records your numbers each session and adjusts the plan from them.

No. Your programme starts from your current fitness and experience. Your trainer teaches you correct technique first and builds the load from there, so beginners progress at a pace that is safe for them.

Your trainer writes a nutrition plan around your training, with recipes and macronutrient guidance. It is built on habits you can keep, with no crash dieting.

Early changes in body composition, posture, strength and energy can show in as little as three weeks, with bigger changes typically within 8 to 12 weeks. Results depend on how consistently you train and follow the plan.

Your programme includes habit tracking and recovery planning alongside the training, so the routines behind your results are ones you can keep after the programme ends.
